Home for the Holidays
A fundraising gala by: Maama Watali House
The intersection of housing insecurity and gender-based violence leaves too many women and children without safe options. Maama Watali House is here to change that by creating homes that offer safe haven, resources, and hope, empowering families to move forward in a secure environment.
On December 3rd, over 100 supporters gathered at Sala San Marco for our inaugural fundraising gala—a memorable evening dedicated to empowering women impacted by gender based violence. The Honourable Minister Marci Ien delivered a heartfelt keynote address, offering powerful insights on Canada's gender-based violence issues and their connection to housing. She also highlighted Women and Gender Equality Canada's (WAGE) three-year funding commitment to our transitional housing project, a transformative step toward creating brighter futures for women in need.
City Councillors Laura Dudas and Stéphanie Plante, alongside Senator Andrew Cardozo, shared compelling speeches underlining the importance of our mission. The evening was further enriched by stunning performances from violinist Alador Bereketab, poet Jacqueline Lawrence, and the Kamengo Culture Group, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the event.

Home for the Holidays is hosted by Maama Watali, an Ottawa based & Black-led Non-Profit organization aiming to raise funds for the construction of a recovery home for domestic violence survivors. The proposed and approved location for the home will be an extension added to the Fourth Avenue Baptist Church in the Glebe. The Addition to the church will help make space for 14 units to house survivors. With the help of the Fourth Avenue Baptist Church, women will be given the appropriate resources to take back control of their lives and lead a better future for themselves and loved ones.
This fundraising event will serve to help bring awareness to the Ottawa community and help bring in funding for the contrustuction. Join us for a seminar filled with networking, awareness and an Auction during the night! (All proceeds will be going towards the funding of the Maama Watali Home for Domestic Violence Survivors)
